It works like this: Francois (HA!Man) and Anton meet for the first time at the Grahamstown Festival during the late nineties. They improvise together on the streets and decided to remain in touch. In 2006, HA!Man phones Anton to tell him he's coming through Durban, how about a gig together? They decide to just sit down and play. No plan, no order. And so they did since then - once a year at most. Their friendship and collaboration grew through these encounters. Never did they sit apart to practise. Their music only comes alive with live audiences. Some performances were recorded by HA!Man and it is from these recordings that this album's tracks are selected. Enjoy!

"Listen with your heart to the silences, and hear the music come forth in spaces between sounds. The HA!Man..and Ant Cawthorn-Blazeby..I cannot fault them on their integrity.. for the interplay of these two artists was without fault in the sense that fault always lead to an evolving brilliance. I found the performance thrilling!" - Helge Janssen

About the artists

One of South Africa's most exciting improvisation collaborations a number of times over the last decade: the standing duo between maestros Ant Cawthorn-Blazeby on violin and Francois the HA!Man on cello, keyboard and more. Francois has been travelling and performing worldwide for a number of years, pushing musical boundaries in an inspirational and spell binding way with a wide variety of styles and expression, from the United States to Eastern Europe to Asia and Africa, featuring performances with cello, keyboard, voice and dance. His music reflects his Southern African roots, and he is also noted as the composer of 'Africa - Her time has come'. Anton's versatility, musical integrity and skill allow him to play across boundaries and genres with a wide variety of other musicians. His particular affinity is with quirky music with a Celtic feel, mostly expressed with Celtis, a project with musicians Ron Uken and Keri Povall. Ant was a founding member of seminal instrumental band Landscape Prayers, which released four critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively during the band's lifetime.
